Undefeated 21-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his WBC (World Boxing Council) Light Middleweight Belt against 40-year old Shane Mosley. Many boxing enthusiasts do not like this fight because of the huge age difference between the two boxers. Even though Shane Mosley has the huge experience compared to the much younger Alvarez, in the late rounds of the fight, Mosley’s body will surely retire. The last time Shane Mosley fought in the boxing ring was against Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao. The fight went the distance but it was very clear that Mosley’s speed and power is not comparable to Manny Pacquiao – or this time, compared to Saul Alvarez.
Shane Mosley has a one-punch knockout power. The last time he won sensationally was against Antonio Margarito in 2009. His last three fights were less than sensational as he scored a couple of losses against Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather while the other one is a draw against heavy underdog Sergio Mora.
The Alvarez vs Mosley fight will help boost the gate and pay-per-view sales of the boxing event, which features Mayweather vs Cotto.
Shane Mosley is a popular boxer because of his sensational wins against Oscar de la Hoya, Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas, among others. Nevertheless, at this time of his career, it is very different. Analysts say that after this fight against the much younger Saul Alvarez, Shane Mosley will hang his gloves and say goodbye to the sport for good – or at least he can become a trainer or a boxing commentator.

But Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KOs) says that he has something to prove. He’s got a lot of convincing to do considering he hasn’t resembled a dominating fighter since upsetting Antonio Margarito in 2009.
"This is more of a fight to prove myself,” said Mosley. “I know I didn't look good in my last couple of fights and I really want to make a statement in this fight."
His intentions sound good, but you have to wonder if Father Time has caught up with Sugar Shane. He is 2-3-1 in his last six bouts and 0-2-1 in his last three.
In a welterweight title fight versus Manny Pacquiao in May of last year, Mosley got knocked to the canvas in the third round and lost in a unanimous decision. He was hit early and retreated into a shell trying to avoid a trip to the hospital.
Mosley said that he was dealing with an Achilles injury in his left foot during that fight, which led to the putrid performance. His team said that the injury is healed but if you follow sports you know that Achilles ailments are nothing to take lightly.
Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KOs) is coming off a five-round, TKO decision over Kermit Cintron. Standing at 5-foot-9 with a 71-inch reach, the WBC junior middleweight titleholder has knocked out all three of his previous opponents.
But critics contend that Alvarez hasn’t lined up against a quality fighter to date. It seems like Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is protecting one of his youngest, and most promising, prospects.
The Mayweather and Cotto fight is set for 10 p.m. ET in Las Vegas so you will want to tune in earlier to catch this one.
